A while back, I got into an argument with a colleague that escalated into her hurling insults at me. I had an emotional outburst; I was in tears, and the more I kept processing the words in my head, the more I thought about what she said, the more I hurt, and it grew even more difficult for me to calm down.

When I eventually put myself together, I heard Papa’s voice. He said to me, “Daughter, what are the names I call you? You are my daughter; you are an heiress, the apple of my eye, wonderfully and beautifully made...”

Then He said, “Whose words matter the most? The names I call you, or the names they call you?”

It is infinitely easier to believe a lie than to accept the truth, even when it comes to ourselves. It is easier for us to believe that we are not good enough, that we are thoroughly flawed, rather than accept the fact that, by the blood that was shed, we are capable of anything, and that we have been made perfect in Him. The idea that, as humans, we can never be perfect, has made it so that someone could tell us we are ‘good for nothing’ or ‘not deserving of that job’ and we readily agree. Yes, we would get angry and sad and hurt the more we think of it, but that is because a part of us agrees with those insults. If you knew that you were good enough, that you deserved everything good that life has to offer, if you believed that, those insults wouldn’t hurt us so much.

We would be secure in the knowledge of who we are in Christ Jesus. He, who loved us so much that He died to make us whole, righteous, worthy, deserving, and able to do all things.

So maybe it is a bit difficult to believe that outright, because of all we have seen and heard. But isn’t it a better alternative? Wouldn’t you rather bask in the knowledge of how God sees you, and ignore what everyone else is saying? Whose opinion matters more to you: theirs, or God’s?

This month, immerse yourself in the knowledge of who you are in Christ. God says you are kind, you are rich, you are smart, you are capable, you are priceless, you are heard, you are sought after, you are productive, you are fruitful, you are successful, you are prosperous!

I am not the names you call me or your supposed opinion about me. I am who God says I am!
